Measuring
Tips for Horizontal Blinds
Type of Mount :
Determine whether the window covering will
mount on the inside of the window sill or on the outside (attached to the actual upper window frame) |
 |
| |
At WESTCOAST we recommend for outside mount w/m
|
This is a preference on your part. Generally, most people
mount on the inside of the window sill,
for a more finished look. However, some window/treatment combinations cannot
accommodate this. For example, if the sill is not deep enough, or if there
is an obstruction such as a door handle or window crank in the way, then
an outside mount is recommended.
Reading a tape measure:
When measuring blinds, do not use 16ths. Use the
nearest 8th instead.
Measuring for inside
mount :
Take the width measurement first. Measure the window in
3 places, at the top, in the middle, and at the bottom (to ensure accuracy,
take more than 3 measurements if the window is over 75" tall). Round down to the nearest 1/8". Note the narrowest of the 3 (or more) measurements
and write it down.Take the height measurement. Again, measure the window
in 3 places, the left side , the middle, and the right side, (to ensure
accuracy, take more than 3 measurements if the window is over 75" wide).
Note the shortest of the 3 (or more)
measurements and write it down.
Measuring for outside
mount :
When measuring for an outside mount, you should make it
large enough so that:
When the window covering is closed, it encompasses molding
that is framing the window.
When pulled open, the window covering stacks completely out
of the window (to maximize view)

Round up to the nearest 1/8". Note the longest of the 3 (or
more) measurements and write it down.Special note: For sliding glass (arcadia) doors:
We recommend allowing 3/4" over carpet and 1/2" over tile to ensure that
the slats do not hang up.
Tips:
- Measure accurately to the nearest 1/8"
- Hold the tape straight, make sure it is taught.
- Do not use a cloth tape-it may have stretched over time.
- Do not take any deductions-all deductions will be taken at
the factory when necessary.
- To make installation easier, label the window coverings by
room
Control Position & Draw :
You can have the controls for opening, closing and rotating
your blinds placed on the left or right side. For
vertical blinds, you can also choose to have the blinds open by sliding
to the left or right, or splitting in the middle.
Fabric Options :
Fabric blinds are too light to be hung like PVC blinds.
Instead, the fabric is inserted in a PVC backing. This
option is called channel panel. Another option is to attach weights
the blinds. This option is called free-hanging.
